If you run an industrial operation, you need to protect your machinery against rust. One way to avoid rust is to install a dehumidifier in your warehouse. Dehumidifiers help keep moisture out of the warehouse. That way, you can avoid rust altogether. If you can't install a dehumidifier, you can still protect your machinery against rust. You can use a rust inhibitor — like from International Chemical Products Inc. Rust inhibitors help protect your machinery against the harmful effects of rust. If you're not sure how to use rust inhibitors, read the list below. Here are four steps that will help you avoid mistakes when using rust inhibitors. 

Inspect for Damage

When it comes to applying a rust inhibitor, the first thing you want to do is inspect your machinery for damage. Machinery that's already been damaged by rust shouldn't be treated with a rust inhibitor. That's especially true where industrial machinery is concerned. Rust damage can undermine the strength of your machinery. If you find significant rust damage, you should replace the machinery. Apply rust inhibitors to protect your new machinery. 

Remove Excess Rust

If you find surface-level rust deposits on your machinery, now's the time to start scraping. You'll want to remove all the surface-level rust before you apply the rust inhibitor. You can use sandpaper or a steel brush to remove the rust. Wipe the residue away with a clean cloth before moving on to the next step. 

Use a Surface Cleaner

Once you remove the loose rust, you'll need to clean your machinery. You should use a grease-cutting cleanser for this step of the process. Use detergent and water to clean your machinery. Be sure to remove all excess rust during the cleaning process. Then, let your machinery air dry. You want your machinery to be completely dry before you apply the rust inhibitor. 

Apply the Rust Inhibitor

Once the machinery is clean and dry, you'll want to apply the rust inhibitor. You don't want to wait too long, or you give rust the chance to start forming again. Before applying the rust inhibitor, be sure to shake the container. That way, you know the rust inhibitor is mixed well. You can use a paintbrush or paint roller to apply the rust inhibitor. If you have areas that are hard to reach with a brush or roller, you can apply the inhibitor with a spray bottle. You want to apply several coats. But, be sure to let the rust inhibitor dry between coats.
